[ARCHIVED] Juvenile Court System Established

The City of Sallisaw in conjunction with the Sallisaw NOW Coalition has established a juvenile court system.

The juvenile court system is designed with the belief that dealing with the offender as a juvenile and using programs designed to change the pattern of behavior will benefit not only the juvenile, but also the city, the school systems and the entire community. The Juvenile Court will redirect youthful offenders to a more productive lifestyle through community programs and support systems.

The juvenile court system will process violations of municipal ordinances including vandalism, shoplifting, trespassing, assault, battery, illegal possession of firearms, truancy, curfews, possession of low-point beer, disorderly conduct, and public intoxication. The juvenile court will determine if the juvenile is guilty or not, and order community service, set fines or order restitution. A juvenile advocate will guide the juvenile through the court system and make sure they complete the sentence.

Sallisaw NOW is a non-profit organization formed in 2008. The organization is dedicated to educating the youth of the community about the dangers of illegal drugs and alcohol.
